First Light provides a platform for students and employers to connect around placements, internships, and early career opportunities in the UK. We aim to use personal data carefully, transparently, and only where needed to run the service.
Who is responsible for your data
First Light is responsible for the personal data you provide through this service. If you create a student or employer account, we decide how that account data is used to run the platform and support placements, internships, and early career opportunities.
What we collect
We collect the information you give us when you create an account or complete your profile. This can include your name, email address, university or company details, placement preferences, portfolio or profile links, profile answers, role briefs, payment status, and reference information if you choose to add referees.
How we use your data
We use your information to create and manage your account, present student profiles to relevant employers, operate employer role briefs, send product emails that are necessary to run the service, respond to support requests, prevent misuse, process payments, and improve how matching works.
AI assisted matching
We may use automated and AI assisted tools to compare student profiles with employer role briefs and surface potentially relevant matches. These tools support matching and discovery, but employers remain responsible for their own review, selection, and hiring decisions.
Who can see your profile
If you are a student and choose to go live, relevant employers using First Light may be able to review the profile information you submit. Your contact email is only revealed to an employer after the consent flow where you agree to share it. We do not sell your personal data and we do not use your profile for third-party advertising.
Payments
Employer payments are processed by Stripe. First Light may store payment status, role payment records, and Stripe reference identifiers so we can operate billing and access to paid features. We do not store full card numbers or card security codes.
Cookies and tracking
First Light uses essential cookies only. These are used to keep you signed in, maintain the site access gate, and support basic session security. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking cookies, or analytics cookies for targeted marketing.
How long we keep it
We keep account and profile data only for as long as we need it to provide the service, meet legal or regulatory obligations, resolve disputes, and maintain basic business records. We review stored data periodically and will delete or anonymise it when it is no longer needed.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or EU, you can ask for a copy of your personal data, request correction of inaccurate information, ask us to delete your data where appropriate, and request a portable copy of the data you provided to us. You can also contact us if you have concerns about how your information is being handled.
References and invitation links
If you add a referee, we will send them a secure link so they can leave a reference connected to your profile. That information is only used to support your First Light profile and is not published publicly outside the platform.
